The Washington Area Humane Society is nearing its goal of distributing 40,000 pounds of pet food to community pets by the end of the year.

Washington, PA – The Washington Area Humane Society (WAHS) collaborates with local non-profit partners, businesses, churches, schools, volunteers, and other animal supporters to identify community pets needing assistance. On November 23rd, the WAHS partnered with the City Mission and distributed over 4,000 pounds of pet food during their annual “Boxes of Love” Thanksgiving food distribution event. Two days later, the WAHS provided over 1,000 pounds of pet food to Trinity High School for distribution at their Thanksgiving food drive. Additionally, two other large-scale distributions took place: one onsite at the WAHS in February, and another at AGWAY’s Eighty Four location in June. The pet food bank program’s distributions are a great way for high school and college students to get community service hours. The WAHS has gotten so much support from the Trinity High School soccer team, Trinity High School vet tech students, and the W&J lacrosse team over the years along with many other wonderful volunteers. The WAHS has given out 39,000 pounds of food  in 2025, supporting over 3,000 community pets! They aim to distribute over 40,000 pounds by year’s end.

In February of this year, the Washington Area Humane Society completed a remodel of an existing structure on the property. Named the CARE Building, it is a 60×20-foot building that gives space for the purchase and storage of large volumes of food for food distributions.  The Snee-Reinhardt Charitable Foundation, Thomas M. Colella & Florence M. Colella Memorial Foundation, and The Washington County Community Foundation Capacity Grant, along with a very generous anonymous donor, made this remodel possible. HK Equipment kindly donated a forklift to help us move food around in the newly remodeled space.

You may be asking how you can help. Pet food donations are accepted anytime in the front white bins outside the main building at WAHS, 1527 Route 136, Eighty Four, Pennsylvania. We only accept unopened bags and cans of pet food. Any food donations are appreciated. Anything we cannot use for sheltering animals is donated to the Pet Food Bank Program.
