Nathan Currie Turns Birthday into Donations for the Humane Society

Nathan Currie of Bethel Park turned eight on November 6th and when asked what he wanted for his birthday, his response was “I really don’t need anything.”  When we talked about what he would like to do for his birthday party he decided to have everyone bring a donation for the Washington Area Humane Society, he thought they might need some items more than he did. Nathan sent  out invitations to his closest football buddies and friends from school saying that gifts were not necessary, but a donation to the WAHS would be accepted. Nathan is a true animal lover and this was a great tribute for someone his age. Awesome job Nathan!

There and Gone - The Cat Castle is Still Smoking

Days after it was demolition, smoke still hung in the air and bulldozers were moving out the debris from the Cat Castle. Though the old Victorian house was never ideal for housing shelter cats, with its sunny windows and large rooms filled with companionable cats, it was heaven compared to the stacks of floor to ceiling cages that now crowd the upper floor of WAHS where the cats are now holed up.

The Cat Castle had a bad roof, suffered flooding and other damage from Hurricane Ivan and was not within OSHA specifications. The final straw came when an outbreak of ringworm in 2006 threatened the entire population of shelter cats which resulted in the permanent closure of the Cat Castle.

Plans for a shelter renovation that will restore the cats to a better environment are in the works.

Modcloth Carves Out  Hefty Donation

Modcloth inspired 250 participants to carve and create memorable pumpkins that raised $1,500 for WAHS.

Modcloth representative Kate Sylanski visited the shelter and brought the check in person along with a trunkload full of donated items on November 13th. It was her first visit to WAHS and from the looks of it, will not be her last!

Modcloth is a Pittsburgh based Mod Retro Indie Clothing and Vintage Clothing Store.

Matt's Birthday was Focal Point for Giving to WAHS

We decided that since Matt has plenty of toys, he should do something nice for the animals of the Humane Society and take up a collection for them in leiu of gifts at his 8th birthday party. Matt agreed to help the animals since he loves our dog Sadie who we adopted from the shelter in Sept of 2001 when Matt was a baby.

Matts birthday is August 10th and his party was Sunday August 9th at our house. His friends and family who attended and brought donations were Devin and Madison Liberatore, Reece Wilson, Kyle and Jake Ketter, Stevie Davies, Madeline, Jack, and Ben Heiser, Zach Ware, and Julia and Bradon Havel.

We are thankful for all of the guests who brought a donation for a great cause.

And we are proud of Matts selflessness and his desire to help the animals of the WCHS.

Thank you
Bob and Jen Liberatore

Hi, it is Buttons, Pandi, and Cuddles Holmes. We would like to tell you about our girl Amanda Rose Holmes. Every year her high school, South Fayette, has a food drive for the Washington Area Human Society. This was the 3rd year, wow !!!!  We made 3 trips to the shelter with truck loads of pet supplies.

Also this holiday season, me (Buttons) turned 8 years old.  When I was a puppy (8 weeks) I was left on the side of the road with my 3 brothers and 1 sister. It was a cold February night and we would like to thank the Washington Area Human Society for having their doors open for us, the discarded and unwanted ones.

My human mom (Maria Holmes) says I am her soul mate!  The Washington Area Human Society gives hope when hope seems lost. Please think about adoption because with every life that comes into yours, your heart will grow. We must always remember to do small things with great love because many small things turn into great successes.  May this valentines day bring true forever homes to the animals.

The fundraiser that Amy and Dominic Dallapiazza along with Ollie the cat, did at the Giant Eagle in McDonald turned out really well. They collected $218.00 in donations as well as 152 lbs of Dry dog food, Dry cat food: 68 lbs., Wet dog food: 35 cans, Wet cat food: 48 cans, Dog treats: 6 packages, Baby food: 8 jars, Bleach: 4 bottles, Paper towels: 10 rolls, Dish liquid: 1 bottle, Cat shampoo, Envelopes, Disinfectant wipes, Hand sanitizer, Pens and Baby wipes.

"I am so proud of our small community of McDonald," Amy said. With tough economic times, it is wonderful to see people still willing to give to a most important cause, God's creatures.
