Young Volunteer Helps WAHS Her Own Unique Way |
| |
Hello, my name is Carys Corry-Roberts, and I am 12
years old. Last summer my cousins and I decided that we wanted to
raise money for a foundation that did something for the sake of
animals. What better foundation that the Washington Area Humane
Society??!! We had a jewelry sale. The day before the sale we made
hand-made what seemed like zillions of bracelets and necklaces. The
next day we went around my neighborhood selling them. We raised a
little over $50. Unfortunately my cousins had to return to Houston,
TX the next day, so I went to the Humane Society to see what they
needed. My parents took me to PetSmart and I bought all the items I
could (cat toys, cat/dog food, puppy/kitten food, treats, etc.) My
family and I also donated some towels, a pet-taxi, and some cat toys
that we didn’t need. We have four cats, a fish and my family
recently welcomed a puppy into our ever-growing animal family. One
of our cats is from the Humane Society I Houston, TX. He Is probably
the best cat anyone could ever have as a companion. I feel that
those hard-working men and women at the animal shelter deserve
something for their efforts and this seemed to be the perfect thing.
I hope that someday animal shelters will not exist because every
animal will have a loving home. |

Crown Castle
Continues to Show its Love for Animals |
| |

|
|
The ELF (Employee
Liaison Forum) Committee, a volunteer team, composed of members of
the Property Management Department within Crown Castle USA, held a
fundraiser for the purpose of donating to the Washington Humane
Society. By selling some delicious baked goods, wonderful crafts and
raffling of awesome gift baskets, they were able to raise the grand
total of $1,170 — this in a matter of a few days! This effort has
shown that Crown Castle has a love of animals, especially those in
need. This money will aid many “pets” who are presently awaiting
adoption. |

Val Porter and the X's Whipping Boy Rocked for WAHS |
| |

Local celebrities Sally Wiggen, Jim Kren
(pictured top left with Val Porter) and Andrew Stockey charmed the long
lines waiting for pancakes at the Houston American Legion Saturday,
October 20th.
|
|
The all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast
fundraiser organized and executed by Val Porter and The Whip was a huge
success with an attendance of approximately 400 people.
The Whipping boy whipped up some pancakes in
the kitchen (upper right) while volunteers, including Sherri Shamonsky
showed a few of the adorable shelter residents, two of which were
subsequently adopted by attendees at the event.
There was a Chinese auction of donated gift
certificates, gift baskets, CD collection and many other unique items
while sports collectibles dominated the silent auction, the highlight
being an electric guitar signed by Steeler quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger.
WAHS is so grateful to to all who donated,
participated and attended this fabulously successful event. |

Wags to Whiskers ... A Big Hit! |
| |
 |
|
Young performers from Dance Extensions Performing Arts Center was a
unique highlight of this year's Wags & Whiskers Event held on
September 29th at the Washington County fair grounds. This second
annual event featured a variety of vendors, arts and crafts, an
extensive Chinese auction, raffles, games, food, and of course,
plenty of cats and dogs. This heart-warming fundraiser helps WAHS to
connect with the public outside the sober confines of the shelter,
away from cages and sad surrendered faces. Thank you to all of the
participants, volunteers and visitors for making this year's Wags &
Whiskers a success. Special thanks to organizers Kelley Keane and
Jeannie Sexauer. |

Parkedge
Pirate Party Generated $819.00 for Animal Shelters |
| |
There
were 48 in attendance on September 22nd. Their host was Pirate Cap'n
Diane Bandy and her maties, Andy Ku and Ken Jakub.
Only 2
lucky winners got the Golden Poop
awards, while many received Mt. Gay Rum
T-shirts and chose from a host of other
gifts .
The
spanakopita was a big hit and the neighbor kids really liked the DJ
machine.
Andy took many great
photos of the evening and some have been shared. The gazebo-tiki hut
was popular and private.........The little love seat in it makes it
feel like home.
Lee
Nesler, executive director of Western PA. Humane Society attended
and so did many shelter workers from Animal Rescue League and
Washington Area Humane Society.
The palm
reader was a big hit and so were the tiki drinks and the fantastic
tropical bar that Ken designed days before the party. Ken's campfire
attracted many fans and the leftover marshmallows were so tasty
after the party.
Dan
Musher showed Diane some dance steps and the hammock-loving
Skarlinskis were such a delight. Ed even got Madonna -- the great
dane's caricature done and he walked her!
Everyone's support was so much
appreciated.

The goal next year is 60 people!! Planned is another

Good Samaritan Saves
Puppy Hit by Car |
| |
On
her way to work recently, Stacy saw what she thought was a dog on
the side of the road, but running late for work she asked a co-
worker who was on her way home to drive by that way and see what was
lying there. It was a 6-month old puppy that had obviously been hit
by a car. They called the State Police who said they would take care
of it. But the next day on the way to work in the pouring rain Stacy
saw that the puppy was still there. She stopped and with help from a
passerby managed to get the puppy in her car. Stacy, personally has
paid more than $500 in vet care for this unfortunate puppy, who has
a fractured hip and leg which required a pin in the hip and splint
on the leg. The puppy is now in the care of "foster mom" Hillary
from the Bethel Park area who will care for the pup (now named
“Poppy”) until she is ready for adoption through the Humane Society.
Because of the compassionate efforts of Stacy, a true animal lover,
this pup might very well have died alone on the side of that road. |

Girl Scouts Tour WAHS |

Thank you so much for the
wonderful tour you provided Junior Girl Scout Troop #678 from Bethel
Park on Friday, April 11th. Our tour guide, Kathy, provided us with
so much information and insight into how hard everyone associated
with the shelter works all for the benefit of the animals. We were
thrilled to be able to "play" with the puppies, kittens, and cats
and feed the dogs some treats. We look forward to seeing and
working with you over the next year as we earn our Bronze Award. In
the mean time, we hope that the monetary donation we made helps in
some way. Thanks again.

Thank you Kristen
Baldi of Chartiers High School Who Hosted Fundraising Dog
Walk-a-thon for WAHS

The Dog Walk-A-Thon held on
Saturday, March 8th at South Park went rather well considering
the weather. All of the dogs got to run around in the off leash
dog area. You could tell that they were really enjoying it. At
first it was just a little cold and towards the end it started
to snow which wasn't so bad. "I'm just glad that it held off for
so long."
Even though there wasn't a huge
turn out, they still managed to collect $322 in donations by the
end of the walk. Kristen is still collecting donations from
people who couldn't make it but still wanted to contribute. So
overall, it went pretty well and all involved had a lot of fun
doing it!
On Friday, December 14th, 2007, the neighbors in McMurray Highlands,
Venetia, went Christmas Caroling. About 22 adults and children sang
around the neighborhood while collecting donations for the Humane
Society. This was th fourth year for the event and $301.75 was
collected that makes the collection total for the years over
$1,000.00. The next day, several of the Caroling children went to
the Humane Society to deliver the donations. while they were there,
the children gave treats to all the animals and cleaned the puppy
cages. What a wonderful Christmas experience for all involved.

They didn't leave their names, but they
brought a lot of good stuff to the shelter in October to help their
less fortunate compatriots who are still waiting for a new home.

To all of you lovely people who helped at the Equestrian Center
event on October 14th -- there weren't a lot of people
there but the event was a great success. Volunteers presented WAHS
dogs so well.
The shelter received $50.00 in donations and Jet Miskis sold 11
calendars. Host Kristin Herman, the owner of the Equestrian Center
said she will also send the shelter a check after she counts the
money she made from the food sales and hay rides.
This was the first year for this event. Kristin said she wanted it
small this year, but next year she will advertise and improve this
event.
The Humane Society reached a new core of people. Horse people. You
never know what a kind word or smile may have done for someone that
day. You never know what our presence there may bring in the future.
Maybe more adoptions. Maybe more donations. Maybe just good-will.
You just never know.
Thank you to Sherri Shamonsky and every participating volunteer for
giving up a beautiful fall afternoon to spend it with our homeless
animals.

Every year Honey Bunny celebrates her
birthday (this year is her 9th) with 75 guests, an outdoor picnic
and wonderful homemade cooking. This year's theme was Hawaiian with
palm trees, surf boards and lais. A Hawaiian quiz was given. The
children had an egg hunt and received a bag of goodies. In lieu of
gifts, guests were asked to bring something the Humane Society could
use. This year, more than six-hundred pounds of materials were
donated. Kudos to Judy, Pat and Glennie Berdine of Washington, PA.
