Burglary Hurts the Shelter
An early December break-in at Animal Crackers Resale Shop made the
Holidays Season look very dim for the animals at WAHS. Thieves made off
with the safe as well as a large collection jug stuffed with loose bills
and change ear-marked for the care and upkeep of the shelter. Spirits were
shaken but never broken. WAHS and Animal Crackers thanks everyone who has
helped them get back to business.

Good Samaritan Saves
Puppy Hit by Car |
| |
On
her way to work recently, Stacy saw what she thought was a dog on
the side of the road, but running late for work she asked a co-
worker who was on her way home to drive by that way and see what was
lying there. It was a 6-month old puppy that had obviously been hit
by a car. They called the State Police who said they would take care
of it. But the next day on the way to work in the pouring rain Stacy
saw that the puppy was still there. She stopped and with help from a
passerby managed to get the puppy in her car. Stacy, personally has
paid more than $500 in vet care for this unfortunate puppy, who has
a fractured hip and leg which required a pin in the hip and splint
on the leg. The puppy is now in the care of "foster mom" Hillary
from the Bethel Park area who will care for the pup (now named
“Poppy”) until she is ready for adoption through the Humane Society.
Because of the compassionate efforts of Stacy, a true animal lover,
this pup might very well have died alone on the side of that road. |

Pre-school Class Holds Dog Biscuit
Fundraiser |
| |
 |
|
On March 10, the
Pre-School Kindergarten morning Religious Education class at
Sunnyhill (UU Church of the South Hills) performed a service project
as part of our on-going curriculum. The theme of the project was
service to animals, and the kids held a fund-raiser benefiting the
Washington Area Humane Society.
The kids spent the
morning preparing and baking dog biscuits and sold them between
services at our church on Sunday. The kids had a lot of fun with
this project and are very happy to present the proceeds (forty-four
dollars) as a gift from our class to you. |

Dormont Elementary School
teacher, Selena Bixler (who volunteered over the summer by walking
dogs at WAHS) organized a very
large donation drive for our shelter. Grades kindergarten through
5th grade participated. The classroom that brought in the most
donations was rewarded with a pizza party in
the classroom. Selena and her husband delivered the items in a 20
foot box truck
on Saturday, December 9th. |
