Can You Foster a Dog or Cat?

The need for foster "parents" to homeless animals is enormous at the shelter. There are pregnant dogs and cats who need to deliver their litters in safety and comfort; and the offspring needs to stay with the mother till they are weaned. There are frightened, emaciated animals who have never known the warmth of a home or the love of a human. There are injured or ill animals who need convalescence. There are old animals who need to spend the short time that they have left somewhere other than in a metal and concrete cage. And there are animals whose fate remains murky during drawn out court proceedings who lie listless and depressed for countless weeks, months and even years.

We see all of these situations and more at the Washington Area Humane Society. Foster homes give animals a huge advantage by providing a nurturing environment where they can be  socialized, overcome health and behavioral problems and avoid the stress of the kennels.

If you can help for a few days, a few weeks or a longer period, we implore you to sign up as a foster parent.

For more information on fostering, please call the shelter at 724-222-7387.

A Bag of Special Potato and Duck Dogfood Will be a Big Help

As each animal enters the shelter, they bring a history that might be a mystery if they come in as strays. Our vet techs try to identify the weak, the ill or those with special needs due to allergies. We routinely have a few dogs who require special food to help them improve or regain health and vitality. We would like to continue to feed them Dick Van Patton's (Hypo-Allergenic) Natural Balance Potato and Duck dog food and we are running low. Please bring us a bag of this special food for some of our special dogs. It is available at most major pet food stores.

See Mocha and Scamper at PetSmart in Washington, PA

Mocha is a dilute calico and Scamper is black. There were 11 of them at our shelter and most have been adopted. These two can be visited at PetSmart. They play all the time, and can be adopted separately or together.  They would like to run around with unbound energy in a loving forever home. They have age appropriate shots, spayed and neutered and are microchipped. If interested, fill out application and give it to a PetSmart associate.

Please Help Share the Load for Freeway and Olie

That’s Olie —a lovely black cat with happy, curious eyes—happy because he was fortunately rescued after being hit by a car and brought to the shelter on Monday, May 12th. And curious because he is probably wondering what will become of him now. It looked like Olie might lose a his leg, but the surgery along with plates and pins are holding the leg together and it looks like Olie will make a full recovery. He is resting comfortably at the shelter and is in need of a new loving home. Com visit with this personable cat who has had a bad break.

On Tuesday, May 13th local Animal Control was called to North Franklin for a dog hit by a car. The pretty brindle 6-month old pup, sustained substantial injuries — a broken right hip and mangled paw and a broken left femur. The hip and paw injuries were too severe and has required an amputation. The broken femur has been surgically repaired with plates and pins. Jimmy, nicknamed  “Freeway”, a pleasant and sweet-natured dog according to veterinarians who saw him, is now recovering. He will need many months of recovery but should have a good outcome be available for adoption.

These emergencies and the subsequent specialized veterinary care that they need has already cost $4,063.00. We are asking for your help to finance this unexpected financial burden which is above and beyond the basics our shelter can provide. Please share the load for Freeway and Olie.

Make your tax-deductible donation* check payable to WAHS and write “Freeway and Olie” in the memo line or [click here] to use a credit card through Paypal

*All donations in excess of what is necessary for Olie and Freeway will be used for our other deserving shelter cats and dogs.

It costs $1,500.00 per day to run the Washington Area Humane Society. That includes the utilities, building upkeep, medicine, food, cat litter, veterinarian services, gas and maintenance for our vehicles, insurance, postage, payroll, and everything else required to run a normal business.

We have no steady stream of income upon which we can rely. We rely on you.
That’s what the 1,500 Club is meant to be ... 1,500 people who donate a dollar a day all at one time. It’s a reliable way to secure our $500,000 annual budgetso we won’t have to sweat the whole year deciding from day to day between whether to purchase flea and tick medicine or pay the water bill.

Become a member of an exceptional group of supporters who pledge a dollar a day annually to our Humane Society. Call 724-229-0404 to pledge your dollar a day. Or email: washahs@fyi.net. Or download the pledge form, and mail it back. You will be contacted during the last week of November, 2008 to collect all tax-deductible pledge donations via check or credit card during that week. Just a dollar a day from 1,500 animal-loving, caring people will do it to keep our shelter in business for another year.

All 1,500 contributors will have a memorial brick with their personalized message placed at WAHS.

Can't Adopt an Animal but Would Love to Help One?

Sometimes the timing is not right, or
the circumstances make it impossible to adopt a dog or cat who captures your heart.

Consider sponsoring a pet's adoption by purchasing a GET OUT OF JAIL FREE Card for that dog or cat who melts your heart. Choose an adoptable adult dog or cat, and pay their adoption fee (Dogs: $75.00 / Cats: $40.00). We will keep the card on file until someone chooses that dog or cat to adopt, fills out the application and is approved. Only then will they be told that their new best friend has a Get Out of Jail Free card, and when they ride out into the sunset together we will mail the card to you so you can share in the joy.
