Howdy a.k.a Roscoe "Old Man" Jenkins — June 2009

Just wanted to let you know that Roscoe, (formerly known as Howdy), is doing sooooo well!!!  He is the absolute joy of our family.  He is actually running now and howling (not barking)!  It is so hilarious!!!  He has quite a personality. He’s not a big fan of dry dog food, but loves Alpo and hot dogs. He is so finicky about his food. If he doesn’t like what is in his bowl, he butts the bowl with his head until he dumps it over!!  He has gained weight and he loves to be outdoors with the kids  He can jump up and down the two steps that lead from the garage to the laundry room.  (He used to be afraid to go up and down those steps, and we would have to carry him)  He gets to ride with us everywhere we go  He did have a cold once and you could hear the rattling from the phlegm in his chest.  We let him get lots of rest, plenty of fluids and lots of love.  He eventually started to cough up the phlegm.  He is just fine now.  My youngest daughter, Breanna, LOVES Roscoe to death.  He really is her best friend now.  She treats him like he is a baby…always holding him and rocking him.  However, yesterday, Breanna was out in the backyard doing gymnastics. I guess Roscoe felt like she wasn’t paying him enough attention, so he got a running start and made sure he ran into the back of her leg so that she would notice him.  When she turned around to look at Roscoe, he was just looking up at her as if to say “What about me?”  Oh….so precious…….Thanks for allowing us to adopt Roscoe….we love him!!

Brandi — June 2009

After a four day chase through the back streets and alleys of Washington, Brandi arrived at the shelter in the company of the Humane Officer. Scared and under weight, she cowered in her kennel and flinched from even the kindest intended touch. I met Brandi while cleaning in the Falconi building and there was just something about her that drew me back to visit in free moments and even coming in on days off to walk her. Thinking she would never fit into my home with a herd of cats and a young daughter, I waited until Brandi moved into the main kennel before deciding that she was doomed to stay there for a long time due to her fear of people. I took a chance and brought her home to see if she would work out and what a surprise!! She loves the cats and even helps with foster kittens by bathing them and napping with them. She is still a bit timid but we are working on that. I was moved to write while reading about Primo...another wonderful ending and a great dog. Pitt bulls get a lot of  bad press but I wouldn't want any other kind!!

Chuey (formerly Moby) – June 2009

I wanted to send you this updated picture of Moby. We adopted Moby in January when he was 10 weeks old. His name is now Chuey. He lives in a great home with 2 loving kids. The kids are 4 and 2 years of age. They really love Chuey. Chuey is a great dog with everyone that comes to the house. He loves to run outside in the yard and play with the kids. When he is relaxing, he jumps on the couch or the chair and goes to sleep. He has grown alot since we adopted him. Chuey wants to say Hello to all that cared for him at the Shelter. He misses all of you,

Primo – June 2009

I'm writing to give you an update on Primo. We adopted him back in May of 2009 and could not be any happier! He is the sweetest, most loving dog in the world. He gets along great with his new sister (our other Pitbull) Chewy and our two cats. But most importantly, is his relationship with my three children 11, 5 and 3. They are  INSEPARABLE!!! Where ever they go, he's always with them. They love each other so much! My youngest, Frankie, will only go to sleep if Primo is in the bed with him. When I asked him why, he told me that "Primo scares away all the bad dreams for him and leaves only the nice ones." We take him everywhere with us, swimming, on long hikes in the woods, fishing, vacations...you name it. He knows all the basic commands and is working hard to pass the canine good citizenship award soon.

With all of the bad press Pitbulls have been getting, I think it's about time that someone finally told the truth about this loving, beautiful breed! They live to make their owners happy, they LOVE CHILDREN, they'll give you ten thousand kisses every time you walk through the door, they think that they're lap dogs they're intensely loyal, playful and I can honestly say that I wouldn't own any other breed than a Pitbull!

Thank you all so much for your hard work and for bringing our "big baby" Primo into our lives!

Oscar (formerly Ace) – June 2009

I just wanted to let everyone know that Oscar is doing great. Right now he is snoring on the bed as I write. Truly, he is one of the best dogs ever. Oscar made so many friends between 12-09-08 when he arrived at WAHS and 2-12-09 when I adopted him. (Oscar sees it as he adopted me!) Often I think and wonder how Oscar was in your good care for two months and no one adopted him. I consider myself very lucky. He is has a huge heart and wants everyone to know. Many of you may remember my apprehension since I made five trips to WAHS to visit with Oscar. I tell folks that he got the job because he interviewed so well!  His eagerness to please is unmatched in my experience. My children have become so incredibly attached to Oscar. I always laugh when my daughter brings Oscar in her room so they can play dolls together. My son loves to take him out for a game of catch. When the kids are home, there is no other place he would rather be. As I write this, there is another dog at WAHS that I would like to reserve a few sentences for: Beau. Beau could pass for Oscar’s twin (Black and white all in the same places!). They share the exact same disposition, and teddy bear like qualities. I keep hoping that the next time I bring Oscar back to visit I will learn that Beau found a caring family like Oscar.

Thanks and see you all soon,
Greg

Willa (formerly Lacy) – May 2009

I've been meaning to write. We saw Willa as we named her on your website in October 2007 under the abused animals. We picked her up at her foster home on October 16,2007.We knew she was for us. At the shelter she was known as Lacy. She had a badly broken back leg and a front leg that was broken and healed on it's own. Her abuser finally signed her over to you in court in December of 2007.According to her records she was 2 in April of this year. She is doing wonderful and is now fully grown and weighs 70 pounds. She is absolutely beautiful. She is living the carefree life that she was meant to have. We can't imagine life without her.I just wanted you to know how well she is doing.

Petey – April 2008

Here is a picture of Petey who was adopted from the shelter 01/18/09. He is doing good and gets along well with our other cat, Alex. In the picture, Petey is on the left and Alex is on the right side. As you can tell both cats look identical. They are both black and white, have a black spot on their chins, and have white tips on their tails. Thank you for allowing us to adopt Petey. He is a wonderful and affectionate cat......Aaron & Jennifer

Mia (now Luna) - April 2009

In December my fiance and i adopted a beautiful tabby that you all named Mia. Well, Mia is LUNA now, and she is our precious princess. She is spoiled rotten and getting a little fat, but she is healthy, happy, and extremely loving. After a long day at work, Luna greets us at the door and won't stop yowling until we sit down and play with her for at least ten minutes. Then she curls up in one of our laps and watches tv with us. She even tries to type on my laptop, because it takes up "Her" space. I've included some of the pictures we've taken of her so that you can post them if you like.  Thank you for taking such good care of my sweet baby until I could bring her home.

Diamond (now Chooie) - April 2009

Hi everyone!  It’s been a couple months since I left the shelter, and I really love my new home. I have a new name now. My parents call me Chooie. My new house has really comfy furniture inside, and my parents bought me a fence so I can play outside too. My mom gives me pink toys and collars that I look good in.  I like the way she’s always kissing me on my nose and telling me I’m her pretty princess tough girl. My dad thinks it’s funny but he likes to throw all the pink tennis balls to me and I’m getting good at catching them. They even gave me a pink Easter basket and took pictures of me in my pink Easter bunny ears while I ate all my pink treats (then I ate the ears!). Now they want to adopt a brother for me, so I guess I have to start learning how to share.  They’re making me take some training class to learn better doggie social behavior, then I guess I have to come back down to help pick out my brother. I hope he likes the color blue though, ‘cause I already told mom and dad that he can’t have any of my pretty pink princess toys. I’ll see you all soon!

And thanks for taking care of me for so long and helping me find a permanent home!

Love,
Chooie

Coco - April 2008

We adopted Coco (aka Tasha) from you In January (the 27th I believe). She now has a big yard to play in, and a best friend kitty cat whose ears she loves to bite. She loves peanut butter and chasing tennis balls and napping in the couches big pillows. We adopted Coco to mend our hearts and minds after losing another dog that we loved very much to cancer. Upon seeing her little face, we couldn’t leave without bringing the runt-of-the-litter home with us. While our family will never forget our lost puppy friend, Coco sure has helped in keeping us busy in healing our pain. Her mother is Quesha the English setter who was also at the shelter. She had several brothers and sisters at WAHS as well. We are so grateful for her. A donation to assist Sugar Ray the cat has been made on behalf of Coco.

Sophie – April 2009

HI! This email is for everyone who helped us adopt our little kitty Sophie on Friday March 20th. We just want to thank you all for allowing us to adopt her, she is seriously the perfect kitten. In our first few days with her we have had many hours playing and our favorite... cuddling! She absolutely loves the toy from the shelter and picks that one over all of the other toys she now has (she is obviously spoiled!) She also loves cuddling up next to us. She will get as close as possible to your face and neck and lay for hours just purrrring away! Every night when I sit down to do my homework she is on my lap either watching my type away or taking a cat nap, as she is right now! Bringing her home from a shelter we thought she may have a few health problems and probably be scared but she is a little healthy kitten and never spent one moment since she has been here scared. She has never once seemed sad or lonely either! We are so happy to have Sophie in our lives, thank you very much for taking care of her until she became a part of our family!
Thanks again,
Katelyn Percinsky

Root Beer – March 2009

Hello all,

It has been pretty close to 1.5 years now since i was adopted. I have so much fun going to parks with my dad, but as you can probably tell by my picture, I like the rides alot better. I just wanted to thank everyone that had taken care of me, and treated me so well. I am hoping to stop by sometime soon to visit you all. Take care and thanks again.

Sincerely,

Jimmy (aka Freeway) – March 2009

HI all ... its Jimmy (Freeway)

It's been almost a year since my surgery and I wanted to give everyone a update on how I am doing. You would be very surprised at what I can do on three legs!

I had a full long recovery with my foster family who fell in love with me and adopted me. They also kept my name, Jimmy. I now live on a three-acre farm where I have plenty of room to run and play with my five sisters — a German shepherd three Belgian Malinois and my baby sister (also from WAHS), an am-staff  named L'il Kim who never leaves my side, as you can see. We do everything together. I also live with six kitty cats.

I just wanted to THANK everyone who helped with my mdical expenses and gave me another chance to live a long happy life. Without all of you and the Washington Area Humane Society, I would not be here today to tell you my story.

Love Jimmy

Bullet – March 2009

"Haven't sent any pictures for a while, but all are doing well! Bullet just graduated from obedience class and is a STAR puppy! Always doing something funny - so glad we have him. Take care."

For those who remember the unbelievably sad story last year of the puppies who were found...one shot dead, and Bullet, (pictured at left) with a gunshot wound, who survived along with another sibling.

Bullet has grown into a real stunner. He is pictured below, laying beside his two "siblings" in his new home.

Bryce – March 2009

We adopted Bryce around October 2008-- just wanted to let you know he is doing great!!  We bought a LoveSac as one of our couches, which Bryce has adopted as his overpriced dog bed.  And he is our 55 pound lap dog, he always has to be laying on top of someone... whether he is chewing a rawhide or sleeping, he is so loving!  But he has "play" written all over his face, he could be in a dead-sleep and if you wake him up, he's ready to go.  He graduated from his training classes in December and will hopefully be passing his test for his Canine Good Citizenship in the next couple months.  Bryce has been such a joy!  For now, I think he likes being an "only child", but maybe one day we will adopt again!  Thank you so much :)

Maggie – March 2009

Wanted to give you an update on Miss Maggie Mae, as my older son calls her. We have had her 1 week now. She is SPOILED. We're having "trouble" with a few things, She REALLY likes the beds and furniture. She gives me those eyes when I catch her on them and tell her to get down. It breaks my heart, but I'm staying firm at least to the furniture. She likes to chase our cat, poor kitty doesn't like this, but they'll get use to each other eventually!!! We are also working on the house breaking thing, she seems to like to use our basement as a potty, even though we go out very frequently, and she goes when we're outside. We don't mind these small obstacles as she gives us so much joy, just look at how she interacts with our boys. we are very much loving having her in our home. She is GREAT!!!! Thank you,

Jennifer, Brad, Kaden and Tyler

Remembering Jake– February 2009

In October of 1992 after much searching area shelters my new husband, 8 year old stepdaughter and I came to WAHS and found THE ONE.  He was about a year old at the time and had a brother in the cage with him. We were not ready for two dogs so with a heavy heart we decided to take just one. We named him "Jake"  I just wanted to let you know that Jake was truly a gift.
He helped my stepdaughter through many years of life threatening illness, and comforted us throughout. He was undoubtedly the smartest, most thoughtful, well behaved, delightful soul, and we loved him with all our hearts until the end.  Sadly we had to have him put to sleep on November 22, 2008.  We stayed with him until the end and brought him home to be
buried in our yard under a crabapple tree. He gave us 16 years of
unconditional love and adoration and we happily gave it back. He was a master fetcher, chewer of sticks, and swimmer. He loved to run, never strayed or ran away. When we would go hiking in the woods, he would get a little bit ahead and stop to wait for us to catch up. He loved to keep us in his sights. We often wondered what happened to his brother and hoped he found a happy home.  He's been gone nearly three months now and we still miss him terribly, but I wanted you to know that he was an angel in our lives.

Godspeed Jakie!
