Avoiding Dog Bites

Here are some tips from the CDC, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the U. S. Postal Service for avoiding dog bites:

Infants and young children should never be left alone with any dog. Babies and toddlers have been killed by trusted family pets when no adult was present.

Neutering dogs, especially males, frequently reduces aggressive tendencies.

Do not play aggressive games, like wrestling, with dogs.

If chased or knocked down by an unfamiliar dog, roll into a ball and lie still.

Children should not play with dogs without adult supervision.

Do not disturb dogs that are sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.

Report stray dogs, dogs running loose and dogs exhibiting unusual behavior.

Avoid direct eye contact with unfamiliar dogs.
